The Story Behind Capture Alaska
Some of the most unforgettable moments in Alaska happen only once, like a breaching whale, a glacier calving, or a bear catching a salmon. I realized many visitors were trying to figure out their cameras after those moments had already passed. With this in mind, I created Capture Alaska to help travelers build confidence before their trip. With our resources, you will arrive prepared, photograph Alaska with confidence, and return home with memories you will enjoy for a lifetime.

I have guided more than 1,000 visitors in Southeast Alaska, helping guests photograph glaciers, whales, wildlife, and breathtaking landscapes. Since then, I’ve continued teaching photography as a park ranger, workshop instructor, and exhibiting photographer. Everything I create is built from real experience helping travelers succeed in the field.

Most Alaska photography advice begins after you arrive. We believe the best trip starts long before you board the ship. By preparing before you leave with practical and engaging resources, you’ll spend less time learning your camera and more time enjoying Alaska’s once-in-a-lifetime moments.

Capture Alaska is designed for travelers who want more than snapshots. Whether you’re sailing on your first Alaska cruise, planning an independent trip, or hoping to improve your wildlife and landscape photography, our goal is to help you come home with photographs you’re proud to share.
Meet Your Guide
Hi, I’m Michael Bain. Before launching Capture Alaska, I helped more than 1,000 visitors photograph Southeast Alaska, from glaciers and humpback whales to bald eagles, bears, and some of Alaska’s most spectacular landscapes. I’ve since continued teaching photography through workshops, exhibitions, and my work as a park ranger.
I decided to create Capture Alaska because I kept noticing the same challenge: many travelers were trying to learn their cameras only after they had already arrived in Alaska. Instead of asking you to memorize camera settings, my lessons, trainings, and resources focus on showing you how you can prepare ahead of time for moments you are likely to encounter during your trip. My goal is to help you arrive prepared, photograph Alaska with confidence, and return home with photographs you’ll treasure for a lifetime.
